Reaching Milan by Air

Milan is served by three major airports:

  • Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP) - the largest international airport located about 50 km northwest of the city center. It is connected to Milan by the Malpensa Express train and various shuttle bus services.
  • Milano Linate Airport (LIN) - closer to the city center, about 7 km away, and is mainly used for domestic and short-haul international flights. You can reach the city center by bus, taxi or private hire vehicles.
  • Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY), also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, located approximately 45 km northeast of Milan, near Bergamo, mainly serves low-cost airlines and is connected to Milan by shuttle buses.

Reaching Milan by Train

Milan is a major railroad hub in Italy, with connections from all over the country and neighboring countries. The main railway stations in Milan are:

  • Milano Centrale - the main international railway station, with high-speed trains connecting you to major Italian cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, and international destinations such as Paris, Zurich, and Munich.
  • Milano Porta Garibaldi - serves both national and regional trains and has high-speed services as well.
  • Milano Cadorna - primarily serves as the terminus for regional trains and the Malpensa Express to the airport.

Reaching Milan by Road

If you're planning to reach Milan by road, the city is well-connected by an extensive network of highways, which are known as Autostrade in Italy. You can get to Milan by car, private coach, or long-distance bus services. Some notable highways are:

  • A1 Motorway - connecting Milan to Naples via Bologna, Florence, and Rome
  • A4 Motorway - crossing the north of Italy, linking Turin to Venice through Milan
  • A7 Motorway - connecting Milan to Genoa

Reaching Milan by Bus

Long-distance buses operate from various European cities to Milan. The main bus terminal is located at Lampugnano Bus Station, which is well connected to the Milan Metro system, making it easy to transfer to the city center or other parts of the city.
