Mirador Heritage and EcoPark - Baguio, Philippines: A Brief History of Tourism

Baguio City, known as the "Summer Capital of the Philippines," has been a favorite destination for both local and international tourists alike. The cool climate, scenic views, and rich culture have made it a unique getaway, especially from the tropical heat of the country. The history of tourism in Baguio dates back to its establishment as a hill station during the American colonial period in the early 1900s. It was designed to be a haven for U.S. military personnel and other expatriates.

The Emergence of Mirador Heritage and EcoPark

Among the many attractions in Baguio, the Mirador Heritage and EcoPark stands out due to its rich history and ecological significance. Situated in the Dominican Hill, it was once the site of the Dominican Retreat House, which played various roles throughout its existence - from being a vacation house for the Dominicans, a refugee center during World War II, to becoming the famed Diplomat Hotel in the 1970s.

As interest in sustainable and ecologically responsible travel grew over the years, the local government envisioned a project that would not only protect the area's rich heritage but also its environment. Thus, the transformation into Mirador Heritage and EcoPark began, reflecting a contemporary trend in tourism where emphasis is placed on conservation and cultural education.

The Latest Tourism Trends

In line with current tourism trends, Mirador Heritage and EcoPark provides visitors with immersive experiences that highlight ecological preservation and local heritage. Eco-tourism is at the forefront of the park's goals, with initiatives to maintain its biodiversity and promote green practices. The park has become a sanctuary for those seeking a deeper connection with nature as well as for enthusiasts of historical and cultural sites.

The park also aligns with the concept of cultural tourism, as it allows visitors to delve into the history of the place through guided tours of the remnants of the old retreat house, and interactive activities that engage them with the customs and traditions of Baguio and the Cordillera region.

More recently, an inclination towards health and wellness tourism has been observed, where tourists look for destinations that offer retreat and revitalization. Mirador Heritage and EcoPark's serene environment and panoramic views serve as a perfect backdrop for such rejuvenating experiences.
