Nalanda is a historical region located in the northeastern Indian state of Bihar. Known for its ancient Nalanda University, it was a center of learning from the 5th century CE to 1200 CE. This UNESCO World Heritage site is reputed to have been visited by the Buddha and to have been a place of study for scholars and students from all around the Buddhist world. The vast complex includes stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings), and important art works in stucco, stone, and metal. Nalanda thrived under the patronage of the Gupta Empire as well as emperors like Harsha and later under the rule of the Pala dynasty. The site was sacked by an army under Bakhtiyar Khilji in the late 12th century, leading to its decline. Excavations have uncovered a trove of Buddhist statues, manuscripts, and various artifacts, offering a glimpse into the life of the ancient monastic university. Today, the site attracts visitors from around the world interested in history, religion, and education.
