Must-Try Foods In Nalanda (Bihar) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Nalanda, Bihar, India

The ancient city of Nalanda, situated in Bihar, is steeped in history and tradition not only in terms of academics and spirituality but also in gastronomy. This region's culinary heritage is deeply influenced by both Buddhist practices and local Bihari customs. Nalanda, being an eminent learning center, attracted scholars and monks from different parts of the world, particularly during the reign of the Gupta and Pala empires. The Buddhist monasteries likely had simple, vegetarian food that supported the monks' austere lifestyle.

With the passage of time, the cuisine evolved to what is today known as Bihari cuisine, characterized by flavors that blend the simplicity of Buddhist fare with the complexity of Indian spices. Recipes often include rice, lentils, milk products, and an array of local vegetables and fruits. Since Bihar is predominantly vegetarian, the cuisine features a variety of plant-based dishes that are both delicious and nutritious.
