Welcome to the New Green Vault (Neues Grünes Gewölbe), Dresden

The New Green Vault in Dresden, Germany, is one of Europe's most impressive treasure chambers. As a pivotal attraction within the Dresden Castle, it demonstrates the grandeur and opulence with which August the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland in the 18th century, intended to express his power and wealth. The history of tourism at the New Green Vault is closely linked to the fluctuating fortunes of the city itself.

The Dawn of the New Green Vault

The original Green Vault (Historisches Grünes Gewölbe) was established by August the Strong in the early 18th century. It was designed as a museum that showcased royal treasure, including ivory, amber, and silver objects, as well as a variety of precious gemstones. The name derives from the formerly malachite green painted column bases and capitals of the initial rooms. Towards the end of World War II, Dresden suffered a catastrophic bombing raid that devastated the city and the contents of the Green Vault were moved to safer locations.

Post-war reconstruction efforts began on the Dresden Castle, and the Green Vault's treasures were gradually returned from the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. The Dresden Castle and its treasures became a symbol of the city's rebirth.

Birth of the New Green Vault

The New Green Vault (Neues Grünes Gewölbe) was opened to the public in 2004, representing a more modern exhibition concept compared to the Historic Green Vault. It displays about 1,000 masterpieces of the baroque treasure chamber in carefully designed showcases, allowing visitors to explore items without glass obstruction, getting intimately close to the artistry and splendor of each piece.

Historical Tourism Rise and Evolution in Dresden

Tourism has been a significant part of Dresden's history since it began rising as a cultural and political center in the 18th century. With its art collections, architecture, and the court's cultural life, Dresden became a prime destination for the European aristocracy and intellectuals, including figures such as Voltaire.

Following German reunification in 1990, Dresden's cultural landscape witnessed a renaissance that bolstered tourism significantly. The city's historical center was meticulously restored, including the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the Zwinger Palace, and the Semper Opera House. The reconstruction of the New Green Vault was also part of this broader effort to reinvigorate Dresden's cultural heritage, making the city and its treasures accessible to a wider, international audience.
