Padmanabhapuram Palace is a remarkable example of traditional Kerala architecture, situated at the foothills of the Veli Hills, which form part of the Western Ghats. Though located in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, the palace is owned, maintained, and governed by the Kerala state government. This architectural marvel was once the residence of the Travancore Royal Family. Built in the 16th century, it is made from intricately carved wooden structures and antique interiors. The palace complex is a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of the region, showcasing murals, black granite floors, colored mica windows, and beautifully crafted ceilings. The Durbar Hall with its shiny black floor is a highlight, made of a mixture of burnt coconut shells, charcoal, lime, plant juices, and egg whites. The palace is preserved in pristine condition, and has a museum displaying royal paraphernalia including weapons, furniture, and portraits of the royal family.
