Best Time To Visit Peter's Basilica (Rome) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, Italy

The best time to visit St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is typically during the shoulder seasons, which runs from April to June and from September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm but not overly hot, and the number of tourists is considerably less than during the peak summer months. This means shorter lines and a more comfortable experience when exploring the splendor of the Basilica. It's important to note that the Basilica can be particularly crowded on Wednesdays when the Papal Audience takes place in St. Peter's Square, so if you prefer a quieter visit, you may want to choose another day.

Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon can also enhance your experience, as these times can offer a somewhat quieter atmosphere to appreciate the magnificent art and architecture of St. Peter's Basilica. Additionally, if your travel allows, visiting during a weekday rather than the weekend can help avoid the largest crowds. Opening hours are usually from 7 am to 7 pm (April - September) and from 7 am to 6 pm (October - March); however, always check ahead for any changes or special events that might affect opening times. Keep in mind that the Basilica is a functioning church with occasional religious ceremonies that might temporarily restrict tourist access.
