As the sun sets, the Rose-Red City, as it is often called due to the color of the stones, takes on an ethereal quality. The experience begins at the Siq, a narrow gorge leading into the city, which is lined with more than 1,500 candles.
Visitors walk along this candlelit path leading up to the Treasury, Petra's most famous monument, which is also illuminated by candles. This spectacle creates a magical and tranquil ambiance, greatly different from the bustling daytime vibe. Traditional Bedouin music often complements the starry sky above and the gentle glow below, while visitors sit on cushions and sip local tea, completely immersed in the history and grandeur of the place.
Petra By Night not only showcases the beauty of Petra after dark but also provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Bedouins who have lived in and around Petra for centuries. This event allows for the appreciation of the site's significance and for a deeper understanding of the human efforts that went into carving this city out of rock more than 2,000 years ago.
The event is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings and requires a separate ticket from the daytime entry to Petra. As this is an extremely popular attraction, it is recommended to book tickets in advance through local tour agencies or the visitor center.
Tourism in Petra evolves continually; however, in recent years, there has been a concerted shift towards sustainable and responsible travel. The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), along with other stakeholders, are increasingly focused on managing the site's visitor capacity to preserve its integrity.
