Best Time to Visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Kandy, Sri Lanka

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located close to Kandy in Sri Lanka, is renowned for its large herd of captive elephants and is a popular destination for tourists interested in close encounters with these gentle giants. The orphanage provides a safe haven for elephants found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. When planning a visit to the orphanage, timing is key to ensuring the best experience. Generally, the optimal time to visit Pinnawala is during the dry season from January to March, as the weather tends to be cooler and more pleasant, which is ideal for spending an extended period outdoors. Moreover, with less chance of rain, you can enjoy the elephant's activities, such as their river bathing sessions, without any interruptions.

Another essential aspect to consider when planning your visit is the daily routine of the elephants at the orphanage. Particularly, viewing the elephants bathe can be a highlight of the visit, with scheduled bath times usually around 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Arriving before these times can ensure you secure a good spot to watch the elephants as they play and socialize in the water. Additionally, feeding time, which occurs at around 9:15 AM, 1:15 PM, and 5:00 PM, offers a unique opportunity to see the younger elephants being bottle-fed. To avoid the crowds and take advantage of the cool mornings, it is advisable to arrive early; the orphanage opens its gates to visitors at about 8:30 AM. Being there when they open can afford a more serene and less crowded experience.
