Saurath Tourism

Saurath is a small village situated in the Madhubani district of Bihar, India. It is renowned for its ancient Saurath Sabha Gachhi, which is a unique mango grove used for hosting a traditional gathering known as Sabha or Mela, where Maithil Brahmins convene to arrange marriages during the Hindu calendar month of Jyestha (around June). This centuries-old custom is rooted in the social and cultural fabric of Mithila culture. Saurath village, with its pastoral setting, gives us a glimpse into rural Bihar and its traditions. The grove has numerous 'Sala' or huts designated for Brahmins from different villages who arrive here to negotiate marriages. The assembly is governed by age-old practices, with priests maintaining genealogical records to ensure that marriages are conducted between non-related families. The place pulsates with activity during the Sabha, although it remains tranquil for the rest of the year.
