Semenggoh Nature Reserve, also known as Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, is a haven for nature lovers and a sanctuary for a number of rehabilitated orangutans in Kuching, Malaysia. The most opportune time to visit this wildlife center is during the feeding times when the orangutans are most likely to appear. These feeding sessions typically happen twice daily, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am and again in the afternoon from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Tourists are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier to secure a good viewing spot and to enjoy a brief orientation about the reserve's history and mission.
Season-wise, the best period to plan your visit to Semenggoh is during the fruiting season which usually spans from June to October. During these months, fruit trees in the forest provide plenty of food for the orangutans, but they still occasionally visit the feeding platforms for supplementary feeding, offering a good chance of sightings. Although the reserve is open all year round, it's worth noting that outside the fruiting season, especially during periods of less abundant natural food, the orangutans may rely more on the feeding sessions, potentially leading to more frequent sightings. Despite this, sightings of wildlife are never guaranteed, and visitors should come with the understanding that these are wild animals in a natural setting.
