Welcome to Session Road, Baguio City - A Historical Overview

The Heart of Baguio City

Session Road is the main thoroughfare of Baguio City, fondly referred to as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines.” Its reputation as a key tourist destination is as vibrant as its bustling sidewalks. Over the years, Session Road has become synonymous with the Baguio experience, weaving together history, culture, and modernity in one dynamic boulevard.

A Walk Through History

The road was named after the first Philippine Commission session held in Baguio in 1904. This event was significant as it marked the transformation of Baguio into a hill station during the American colonial period. The aim was to create a respite from the tropical heat for American soldiers and civilians. Session Road has since evolved, with its winding path leading travelers and locals to an array of shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks.

Cultural Significance and Tourism Growth

In the mid-20th century, Baguio City grew in popularity as a tourist destination, with Session Road at its core. Visitors from all over the world and the Philippines began flocking to this city in the clouds to enjoy its cooler climate, scenic views, and rich culture. Over the decades, Session Road has borne witness to the ebb and flow of Baguio's tourism industry. It saw the rise of iconic establishments, some of which remain landmarks to this day, serving as nostalgic reminders of the city's storied past.

The Emergence of Modern Trends

As tourism demands changed, so did Session Road. It embraced modernity while retaining its old-world charm. The recent focus has shifted towards sustainable tourism practices, with Baguio City taking steps to preserve its natural beauty and cultural integrity. Efforts include regulating the number of tourists during peak seasons and encouraging local businesses to adopt eco-friendly measures.

Session Road Today: A Hub of Activity

Session Road remains the city's vibrant hub, pulsating with local and international tourists year-round. It especially comes to life during events such as the Panagbenga Festival, a month-long flower festival celebrating the blooming season. During the festival, Session Road is pedestrianized, allowing for a street bazaar and numerous performances.
