Must-Try Foods In Shat Gombuj Mosque (Sixty Dome Mosque) (Khulna) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Shat Gombuj Mosque (Sixty Dome Mosque), Khulna, Bangladesh

The food history surrounding the Shat Gombuj Mosque, also known as the Sixty Dome Mosque, in Khulna, Bangladesh, is as rich as its architectural heritage. As the mosque was part of a larger complex, specifically designed for a Sufi community and built in the 15th century during the Bengal Sultanate, the food during that era included a fusion of local Bengali cuisine influenced by Middle Eastern and Persian culinary traditions. The absence of cow meat in the traditional recipes was due to the Hindu influence on the cuisine, where cow is considered sacred.

Traditional cooking methods of the time involved the use of a lot of spices, rice, lentil dishes, and river fish. It was during the Mughal period that the culinary culture around such religious sites started to evolve with the introduction of new techniques and new types of bread like Naan and Paratha.
