Sigiriya Rock Fortress, located in the Matale District of Sri Lanka, is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. Sigiriya is renowned for its historical and archaeological significance and is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. The site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He constructed his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock, he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion, leading to the name 'Sigiriya', which means 'Lion Rock'. The site is dominated by the massive column of rock nearly 200 meters high. The combination of its natural beauty and historical importance has made Sigiriya a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also considered one of the most important urban planning sites of the first millennium, reflecting the sophisticated civilization that once occupied the area.
