Sigiriya, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is an ancient rock fortress located in the Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Known as 'Lion Rock,' this massive column of rock, standing approximately 200 meters high, dates back to the 5th century AD and is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. Believed to be crafted under the guidance of King Kashyapa, Sigiriya showcases a sophisticated network of gardens, reservoirs, and palaces. The site is renowned for its frescoes that are similar to the Ajanta Caves of India, the Mirror Wall with ancient inscriptions and poems, and the giant lion paws sculpted into the bedrock, which serve as a unique entrance to the final ascent. The top of the rock plateau offers breathtaking panoramic views. Sigiriya is also significant for its geological and historical importance, reflecting a remarkable combination of human endeavor and natural landscape, often considered an icon of architectural brilliance and cultural achievement in Sri Lanka.
