Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is a fascinating cultural attraction located in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam. Situated at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang Street, in the bustling city center nearby Hoan Kiem Lake, this popular theatre specializes in the traditional art of water puppetry, a unique Vietnamese tradition that dates back to the 11th century during the Ly Dynasty. Performances are held in a pool of water which serves as the stage, with puppeteers standing behind a screen, manipulating the puppets using long bamboo rods and strings beneath the water surface. The theatre provides vivid depictions of ancient Vietnamese rural life and folklore tales, accompanied by live music from a traditional Vietnamese orchestra. The music includes vocalists, along with a range of instruments such as bamboo flutes, drums, and cymbals, enhancing the storytelling experience. The ambiance of the theatre is enchanting, filled with the excitement of the audience, predominantly tourists eager to experience an integral piece of Vietnamese culture. The puppets are hand-carved and brightly painted, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. Each performance is a spectacle of light, with vibrant sets that portray the rich tapestry of Vietnam's history and mythology.
We attended this through a group booking and were seated about 8 rows from the front.
The puppeteers are brilliant and it was really enjoyable.
What wasn’t enjoyable was the people trying to take phot..
So worth seeing the show. Definitely get the translation device as it explains all the stories into your language and you will better understand what you are watching.

Something different and well worth the visit
Ok, so there are a lot of mixed reviews on this place. But there is a reason that it’s been operating for so so long. It’s a great show, yes the theatre is old, but it’s clean.

Unique water puppet show
We booked vip tickets and got front row seats for the show. It was a nice show. We went a little late and did not know there was translation headphones available so couldn't enjoy the show as much.
