Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Lake of the Returned Sword, is a serene, historical body of water located at the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam. The lake is one of the city's most famous landmarks and is enveloped in local myth and legend. According to the folklore, in the mid-15th century, Emperor Le Loi was boating on the lake when a Golden Turtle God surfaced and asked for his magic sword, which had been given to him to repel the Chinese Ming Dynasty invaders. The Emperor returned the sword, and the lake was named Hoan Kiem in commemoration of this event, meaning 'returned sword'. Surrounded by lush gardens, shady trees, and a bustling cityscape, the lake provides a peaceful retreat from Hanoi's busy streets. The picturesque Ngoc Son Temple sits on a small island at the lake's center, connected by the iconic red-painted wooden The Huc Bridge. The lake and its tranquil surroundings serve as a social hub for city dwellers and a cultural symbol, where many traditional festivities, photo shoots, and leisure activities take place.
