Type of destination: City
Tiberia, one of Israel's popular tourist destinations, is a city rich in history and modern attractions, situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret. Established around 20 CE, it was named in honor of the Emperor Tiberius. It served as a major center for Jewish learning and culture in ancient times. Today, Tiberias blends archaeological and religious heritage with contemporary leisure activities. Visitors can explore ancient ruins, such as the Tiberias Hot Springs with healing waters that have been famous for thousands of years, the Tiberias promenade with stunning views of the Sea of Galilee, or enjoy a boat ride on the lake. Religious sites like the Tomb of Maimonides, one of Judaism's most respected rabbis, are also significant draws. The city's modern amenities include hotels, restaurants, and beaches, making it a great base for exploring the Galilean region. It's notable for being one of the four holy cities in Judaism, along with Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed.
