Umananda Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is perched on the Peacock Island amidst the mighty Brahmaputra river in Guwahati, Assam. This temple is known for its rich historical and religious significance, and the island itself is the world's smallest inhabited river island. Devotees believe that Lord Shiva resided here in the form of ‘Bhayananda’. According to Hindu mythology, it was here that Shiva burned Kamadeva, the god of love, to ashes when he disturbed Shiva's meditation. The Umananda Temple showcases intricate rock-cut figures and sculptures that manifest the expert craftsmanship of Assamese artisans. The temple was constructed by Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in the 17th century, who was a devout Shaivaite. It can be reached by ferries and boats available from Kachari Ghat in Guwahati. The serene surroundings and the rhythmic sound of the river make the temple not just a religious spot but also a place for solace and contemplation.

Overall enjoyable
Ordinary Temple on a very small river island. More prominent for religious reasons. However, Ropeway and Cruise Services by Assam Government are worth enjoying which can be booked/reserved online.
