Must-Try Foods In Zanskar (Ladakh) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Zanskar, Ladakh, India

The cuisine of Zanskar, a remote valley in Ladakh, is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture and the harsh climatic conditions of the region. Traditionally, the Zanskari diet has been largely based on locally sourced ingredients like barley, which is a staple used in various forms such as roasted barley flour known as tsampa. Agriculture is challenging in this high-altitude desert environment, so the diet is supplemented by dairy products from yaks and goats. Due to the Buddhist majority, and cultural traditions, the consumption of meat in Zanskar is done with consideration to religious practices, and beef is generally not consumed.
