Best Time To Visit Zongkhul Monastery (Zanskar) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Zongkhul Monastery, Zanskar

The ideal time to visit Zongkhul Monastery in Zanskar is during the summer months, which typically stretch from late June to early September. This period is preferred as the weather is most favorable with clear skies, allowing for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The moderate daytime temperatures during these months make it comfortable for tourists to explore the monastery and engage with the local culture. Access to Zanskar Valley is easier in summer, too, since the roads are clear of snow, which can block the mountain passes at other times of the year. It's also an excellent period to witness local festivals, like the famous Zongkhul Huchot festival, if it aligns with your visit.

However, it is also worth noting that this is the high season for tourism, which can make Zanskar more crowded than other times of the year. For those who prefer solitude and a more personal experience, visiting in the shoulder months, such as May or late September, could also be rewarding. Though the beginning of May might still carry the tail end of winter or unpredictable weather, and the end of September may start to see the temperatures drop, those times could offer a quieter visit to the Zongkhul Monastery. Keep in mind though, that during these shoulder months, the facilities in Zanskar could be limited, and there is always the risk of early or late snowfall affecting travel plans. Always check the current conditions and forecasts before planning your trip to this remote location.
