Seven Sisters Wartime Airfields

If you are planning a history-led trip through Northeast India, the wartime airfields of the Seven Sisters give you a different way to see the region. These old military airstrips, scattered across Assam and the neighbouring states, tell the story of World War II, the China-Burma-India air route, and how remote towns became strategic bases almost overnight.

This guide is for you if you enjoy heritage travel, military history, or road trips that connect living towns with forgotten runways. You will come away with a practical sense of where to go, how much time to keep aside, and how to build a realistic itinerary across the Seven Sisters.

Why the wartime airfields of the Seven Sisters matter

The Seven Sisters are usually known for tea gardens, monasteries, river valleys, tribal culture, and hill landscapes. But during World War II, several places in Northeast India became vital air nodes for ferrying supplies, personnel, and aircraft. These airfields supported the Allied effort in the eastern theatre, especially along the difficult route from India into Burma and China.

What makes this theme interesting for travellers is that many of these locations are not museum-only sites. Some are working airports, some are military areas, and some survive as local place names or broad airstrip remnants. You may not always see dramatic ruins, but you will find history woven into the geography, the road network, and local memory.

The key wartime airfields to know in the Seven Sisters

Not every historic airstrip is equally accessible, and rules can change depending on security and airport operations. Still, a few names come up again and again when you trace wartime aviation in Northeast India.

Place	State	What it is today	Why it matters
Chabua	Assam	Active airbase area and historic aviation site	Important Allied air base linked to the Burma air route
Dinjan	Assam	Military aviation location	One of the famous wartime names in Upper Assam aviation history
Mohanbari / Dibrugarh area	Assam	Civil airport region	Built on the aviation legacy of the same strategic belt
Jorhat	Assam	Civil airport and heritage city base	Useful stop for exploring wartime Assam and nearby sites
Tezpur	Assam	Civil airport and historic town	Another old aviation hub with strong wartime associations
Imphal region	Manipur	Civil airport area and battle-history landscape	Central to the Burma campaign and the Imphal front
Agartala region	Tripura	Civil airport and state capital access point	Useful for broader WWII and frontier-history travel in the Northeast

If you want the most concentrated wartime-airfield circuit, Assam is usually the best starting point. If you want to connect aviation history with battlefield history, Manipur is the most compelling addition.

Assam: the strongest wartime airfield trail

Chabua and the Upper Assam aviation corridor

Chabua, near Dibrugarh, is one of the most important names in Northeast India’s wartime aviation story. During the war years, airfields in this belt helped sustain Allied operations and the airlift routes that became critical when land routes were unreliable or dangerous. Today, you will experience this area as part of a busy industrial and tea-growing region, but the old strategic logic is still visible in the town’s place in Assam’s geography.

From Dibrugarh, Chabua is typically around 30-45 minutes by road, depending on traffic and exact point of departure. This makes it easy to combine with a riverfront evening in Dibrugarh and a tea estate visit in the same day. For a history-focused traveller, that combination works well because it links wartime logistics with the everyday economy of tea and river trade.

Dinjan, Tinsukia belt, and the wartime eastern frontier

Dinjan is another name that appears often in books and local histories of the period. You may not find a standard tourist facility here, so approach it as a place to understand the landscape rather than a selfie stop. This part of Assam, near Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, was strategically significant because of its position close to the eastern front and the routes into Burma.

If you are building a road itinerary, keep one full day for Tinsukia-Dibrugarh-Tezpur style aviation-history travel, rather than trying to rush multiple locations. Distances in Assam may look manageable on a map, but road conditions, town traffic, and detours through tea-estate roads can extend travel time.

Jorhat and Tezpur as practical base towns

Jorhat and Tezpur are excellent places to use as overnight bases. Jorhat gives you access to Upper Assam’s history, tea culture, and road links toward Dibrugarh. Tezpur, meanwhile, has a long-standing reputation as a military and administrative town, and it works well if you want to pair wartime history with the Brahmaputra landscape.

Both towns have a better range of stays than the smaller historic localities around them. Expect mid-range hotels to fall around ?2,500-?5,500 per night, with better business hotels going higher in peak periods. Confirm availability early if you plan to travel during winter holidays or festival months.

Manipur: where airfield history meets battlefield memory

Manipur is essential if you want to understand how wartime airfields connected to the Burma campaign on the ground. Imphal was not just an administrative centre; it became a decisive theatre in the conflict. The airport area and surrounding landscape are tied to the larger wartime story, and the region is also where you can combine aviation history with memorials, museums, and battle sites.

From a traveller’s point of view, Imphal is best explored over 2-3 days. Keep time for the city itself, the airport-side history, and day trips to related memorials and battlefield locations. If you are interested in military history, this is the place in the Seven Sisters where the emotional and strategic dimensions of the war come together most clearly.

Be mindful that some locations may be sensitive or have access restrictions. It is best to confirm locally before heading out, especially if you are planning photography or trying to visit sites close to defence-managed areas.

Tripura and the wider frontier aviation story

Tripura is not usually the first state people mention in a wartime airfield discussion, but it still fits the larger Northeast frontier story. Agartala is the natural base city, with its airport and growing road connectivity making it easy to include as part of a wider history itinerary.

If your route already includes Assam and Manipur, Tripura can add a useful south-western angle to the journey. It also helps you understand how the Seven Sisters functioned as a connected frontier belt rather than isolated states. For most travellers, one night in Agartala is enough unless you are extending the trip to other heritage or nature attractions in the state.

How to plan a wartime airfields itinerary

A sensible trip should not try to cover every historic airfield in one go. Instead, choose one of these approaches based on your time.

1. Quick history break, 3-4 days: Base in Dibrugarh or Jorhat, then explore Chabua, Dinjan, and the wider Upper Assam aviation belt.
2. Balanced heritage trip, 6-7 days: Combine Assam’s airfield history with Tezpur and a short stay in Imphal.
3. Deep WWII route, 8-10 days: Add Manipur properly, then extend to Tripura if your schedule allows.

A sample route could look like this: arrive in Dibrugarh, spend a day around Chabua and the tea belt, move to Jorhat for a night, continue to Tezpur, then fly or drive onward to Imphal for the battlefield-airfield story. If you are travelling by road, keep one buffer day because Northeast itineraries are best enjoyed without tight connections.

Best time to visit the Seven Sisters for this theme

The best season for a wartime airfields trip is generally October to April. The weather is more comfortable, roads are easier to manage, and the view of the landscape is clearer. November to February is especially good if you want pleasant daytime temperatures and less humidity.

Monsoon months, roughly June to September, can make road travel slow and unpredictable. Some areas receive heavy rain, and river crossings or hill routes may take longer than expected. If you must travel then, keep extra days in hand and book flexible transport where possible.

Airfare into Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Imphal, or Agartala can vary widely by season. Indicative domestic one-way fares may range from ?4,000-?10,000 or more, depending on booking lead time and demand. Train-plus-road combinations are cheaper but much longer, so choose based on comfort and the time you have.

Practical tips for visiting historic airfield areas

• Do not assume every historic site is open to casual entry. Many old airfields are still near active defence or airport zones.
• Carry local contact numbers. A hotel desk or driver often knows the current access situation better than an old travel guide.
• Plan for road time, not just map distance. A 50 km drive in Assam or Manipur may take 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic and road works.
• Use local guides where available. They can point out place names, old runway alignments, and war memory that are easy to miss on your own.
• Respect photography rules. Avoid taking photos near security zones, and always ask before photographing people or military-related structures.
• Keep a flexible budget. For a comfortable mid-range trip, expect around ?4,500-?8,500 per person per day excluding long-haul flights, depending on hotel category and transfers.

What else to pair with the airfield trail

One of the advantages of this theme is that it fits naturally into a broader Northeast itinerary. In Assam, you can pair it with tea estates, the Brahmaputra riverfront, and heritage towns like Sivasagar if you have extra time. In Manipur, add Loktak Lake, the memorial complexes around Imphal, and local craft and market visits. In Tripura, combine Agartala with palaces, temple visits, and easy city sightseeing.

This makes the journey more balanced. You are not just moving from one historic point to another; you are also seeing how wartime infrastructure now sits inside living states with strong food, culture, and landscape identities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the wartime airfields in the Seven Sisters open to tourists?

Some are accessible only from nearby public roads or designated visitor points, while others are tied to active airports or defence areas. You should not assume direct entry without checking locally. In many cases, the interest comes from the place name, the surrounding landscape, and the related museums or memorials rather than a fully open runway site.

Which state is best for a wartime airfields trip?

Assam is usually the best starting point because it has the strongest cluster of historic aviation locations and easier road links between them. If you want the deepest war-history experience, add Manipur for the Imphal connection. Tripura can be a useful extension if your route already covers the western side of the Northeast.

How many days do I need for this theme?

You can get a decent overview in 3-4 days if you stay within Assam. For a more satisfying trip that includes Manipur, plan 6-7 days. If you want to move at a comfortable pace and include extra heritage stops, 8-10 days is better.

Is this trip suitable for families?

Yes, especially if your family enjoys history and road travel. The itinerary works well with moderate sightseeing, and you can mix in tea gardens, river views, and city breaks. Just keep travel times realistic and avoid overloading the schedule.

What kind of budget should I keep?

For a mid-range trip, a practical budget may be around ?15,000-?35,000 per person for a short Northeast circuit, excluding long-distance international travel and depending on flight prices. Hotels, intercity transfers, and guided visits will shape the final amount the most. As always, confirm current rates before booking because prices change by season.

Can I do this trip by self-drive?

You can, but only if you are comfortable with long-distance Northeast road conditions, local traffic patterns, and changing weather. Many travellers find it easier to hire a car with a driver for flexibility and local knowledge. That usually saves time, especially when you are trying to locate older airfield-related sites.

Conclusion

The wartime airfields of the Seven Sisters offer a thoughtful, unusual way to travel through Northeast India. Instead of rushing from one scenic stop to another, you get to trace how the region helped shape a crucial chapter in wartime history, especially across Assam and Manipur. If you plan well and keep your schedule flexible, this can become one of the most memorable heritage journeys you take in India.
