The Airavatesvara Temple is situated in the quaint town of Darasuram, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is a part of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is an outstanding example of Chola architecture and is known for its rich sculptural work. The temple was built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century. The vimana (tower over the sanctum) is 24m high and exquisitely carved. The stone chariot in the front of the temple is noteworthy and illustrative of the Dravidian architecture. The temple also features a mandapam with 100 pillars and is adorned with exquisite stone carvings on its walls and pillars, showcasing the prowess of Chola artisans. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Airavatesvara because it is believed that Airavata, the white elephant of the king of gods, Indra, worshipped Shiva here. Pilgrims and tourists visit the temple to pay their respects and marvel at the architectural brilliance.
