Tehri is a town in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, situated at an elevation of about 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) in the Himalayan foothills. It is known for the New Tehri town which is a modern settlement built after the old Tehri town was submerged due to the construction of the Tehri Dam. This dam is one of the highest in the world, harnessing the waters of the Bhagirathi River, and creating the massive Tehri Lake. The region around Tehri is rich in natural beauty, with lush green hills and the snow-capped Himalayas in the backdrop. It provides opportunities for water sports on the lake created by the dam. The history of the region is associated with the erstwhile Tehri Riyasat (kingdom) that was disbanded when India gained independence and subsequently merged into the state of Uttar Pradesh, and later into newly formed Uttarakhand in 2000. Today, Tehri serves as a hub for tourism and hydroelectric power generation, and it is an example of modern engineering marvels in the face of resettlement and environmental challenges.
