Allahabad Fort Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 2 to 3 hours
Allahabad Fort stands as a regal monument in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers. Established by Emperor Akbar in 1583, this fort is a splendid example of Mughal architecture, showcasing the prowess and architectural ingenuity of the Mughal era. It is one of the largest forts built by Akbar and holds immense historical significance as it was the site of various important events, including the treaty of Allahabad signed in 1765. The fort encompasses several notable structures within its premises, like the Zenana (for royal ladies), Saraswati Koop, a well said to be the source of the Saraswati River, and the Akshaya Vat, an immortal banyan tree. The Allahabad Pillar, a third-century BC Ashoka Pillar, displays inscriptions from various historical periods and is a major attraction. Whilst a significant portion of the fort is occupied by the Indian Army and not accessible to civilians, visitors can still marvel at the fort's grandeur and historical artefacts that are on display.

Allahabad Fort on the Yamuna river bank
Had to stand in a long que for entry into the fort during Kumbh Mela. It was under renovation so could explore much of the fort. Main attraction is the "Patalpuri Mandir" and the
" Akshaya Vat".
