The Ashoka Pillar in Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is located within the Allahabad Fort, near the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. This sandstone pillar dates back to 232 BCE and was erected by the Mauryan king, Ashoka. It stands as a testament to the architectural and historical prowess of ancient India. The pillar is famous for its inscriptions, which are among the earliest epigraphic evidence for the spread of Buddhism. Prayagraj's pillar bears inscriptions from Ashoka in Brahmi script, Gupta emperors, and the Mughal emperor Jahangir. The script engraved on the Ashoka Pillar covers various edicts that preach about moral responsibility and non-violence. The pillar was original to the region and was moved to its current location by Mughal rulers. Visitors come to this spot not only to learn about the ancient Mauryan empire and Ashoka's legacy but also to appreciate the intricate carvings that showcase the bygone era's craftsmanship.
