The Akshaya Vat, also known as the 'indestructible banyan tree', holds great significance in Hindu mythology and is situated inside the Patalpuri Temple. This ancient tree resides in the Allahabad Fort, near the banks of the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers in Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, India. The fort itself is a historical edifice constructed by Emperor Akbar in 1583. The etymology of 'Akshaya Vat' stems from the belief that the tree possesses immortal and everlasting qualities. It plays a crucial role in religious ceremonies, especially during the Kumbh Mela, where pilgrims consider it auspicious to visit. There is a legend stating that if someone jumps from this banyan tree into the confluence of the rivers below, they attain immortality. As such, the tree represents eternal life and is deeply engraved in the spiritual ethos of the region. Access to the Akshaya Vat is restricted as it is located within a military area under the control of the Indian Army.
