Ancient Ruins of Vikramshila University Tourism

The ancient ruins of Vikramshila University, located near the town of Bhagalpur in the state of Bihar, India, represent the glorious academic heritage of ancient India. Founded by King Dharmapala in the late 8th or early 9th century CE, Vikramshila University was one of the two most important centers of Buddhist learning in India, alongside Nalanda University. This esteemed institution is believed to have been established for the purpose of cultivating and propagating Buddhist teachings and as a response to a perceived decline in the quality of scholarship at Nalanda. It was an eminent center for Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana) and played a significant role in the development of the Tibetan Buddhism. The university complex was spread over a large area and included numerous stupas, shrines, and monasteries. Excavations have uncovered the site's principal stupa, a library building, residential quarters for monks, and a complex gate. The architectural ruins stand as a testament to the academic excellence and spiritual prowess that once thrived within its boundaries.
