Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary Tourism

Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is a protected area in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, India, established for the conservation of the Gangetic dolphins. Stretching over 50 km along the Ganges River, it was established in 1991 and lies between Sultanganj and Kahalgaon. The sanctuary is named after the ancient Vikramshila University. The Gangetic dolphin, India's National Aquatic Animal, is the main species being protected here. This sanctuary is one of the few of its kind in India, focusing on the habitat conservation of an aquatic mammal. The Gangetic dolphins are an endangered species due to direct killing, habitat fragmentation, and degradation. The tranquil and pristine environment of the sanctuary with the majestic river and its thriving aquatic life makes it an important ecological destination. Visitors not only have the opportunity to see the dolphins in their natural habitat but also enjoy the serene beauty of the Ganges and the rich biodiversity it supports, including various fish species, turtles, and native birds.
