Angkor Wat is an iconic temple complex located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is the largest religious monument in the world, originally constructed as a Hindu temple for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. Built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat is renowned for its grand scale and intricate artwork, covering an area of over 162 hectares. The complex is designed to represent Mount Meru, the home of the gods, according to Hindu mythology, and is encircled by a large moat which adds to its majestic appearance. The temple's five towers are meant to emulate the peaks of the mountain, with the central tower standing at a height of 65 meters. Angkor Wat is famous for its detailed bas-reliefs and stone carvings that adorn its walls, depicting various Hindu epics, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Tourists flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to witness its architectural beauty and historical significance, particularly at sunrise, when the light beautifully illuminates the temple's facade.
