Must-Try Foods In Banteay Srei (Siem Reap) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Banteay Srei, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Located in the Angkor region, Banteay Srei stands as a remarkable testament not only to architectural elegance but also to the rich culinary traditions of Cambodia. Traditionally, this area benefits from a wealth of natural resources that have shaped both the local diet and the methods of food preparation, influenced by both the rhythms of the farming calendar and the diverse cultures that have trafficked through the Khmer empire.

Cambodian cuisine has deep roots in the ancient practice of rice farming and is heavily reliant on freshwater fish from the Tonle Sap Lake for protein, which shapes the diets in places like Siem Reap. Spices, including local herbs, chili, lemongrass, and the famous kroeung paste (a mix of spices and herbs), are the backbone of flavor for many dishes. While Banteay Srei is far from the coast, freshwater catches have historically provided a diet rich in varied fish species, whereas vegetarian ingredients come primarily from home gardens or local markets.
