Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Porbandar in Gujarat, India, is a lesser-known haven for various species of flora and fauna. Spread over an area of roughly 192.31 square kilometers, it was established in 1979. The sanctuary encompasses part of the districts of Porbandar and Jamnagar and acts as a green bridge between two major geographical entities: Saurashtra and Kutch. Barda was once the private hunting ground of the erstwhile rulers of Porbandar and is characterized by dense forests, hilly terrains, and several water bodies – providing a unique ecosystem akin to the Gir Forest National Park. The area is rich in biodiversity, including a number of rare plant species and endangered animals like leopards, hyenas, and crocodiles. It is also home to the Maldhari community, who have lived in harmony with the wildlife for centuries. The sanctuary offers a serene escape from the hustle of city life and is an important ecological asset for environmental conservation efforts in the region.
