Junagadh is an ancient and historic city located at the foothills of the Girnar Hills in the state of Gujarat, India. It is renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, with numerous monuments, temples, and forts that draw tourists and historians alike. Junagadh literally means 'Old Fort', and fittingly, the city is famous for the Uparkot Fort, an ancient fort built by the Mauryan dynasty in 319 BC. Another significant attraction is the Girnar mountain, which is a major pilgrimage site for Jains due to the temples on its hills, particularly the Girnar Jain temples. The city was also once the capital of the princely state of Junagadh before it was merged into India post-independence. In addition to its historical landmarks, Junagadh is also known for the Gir Forest National Park, which is the sole home of the Asiatic Lions. Furthermore, Junagadh's bazaars offer a vibrant glimpse into the life of the locals, with various traditional goods and crafts available.
