Sasan Gir, also known as Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, is a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, India. It was established in 1965 with a total area of 1,412 sq km (about 545 sq mi), designated for the protection of Asiatic lions. Gir Forest is the sole home of this lion subspecies outside Africa, and it has played a significant role in their conservation. The topography of Sasan Gir comprises rugged hills, mixed deciduous forests, and extensive grassland ecosystems which provide habitats for various species including leopards, antelopes, vultures, and pythons, among others. It is also home to more than 2000 species of fauna which includes birds, insects, and reptiles. Visitors can take jeep safaris to spot majestic lions in their natural habitat and experience the rich biodiversity of the park. The sanctuary is not only important for wildlife conservation but also for sustaining the agricultural economies of the region by providing water resources for irrigation. Its diverse flora includes teak, acacia, and banyan trees. The Indigenous Maldhari community lives here in harmony with the wildlife, their livestock forming an integral component of the forest ecosystem.
