Best Time to Visit Bumla Pass, Tawang

Bumla Pass, located near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, is a scenic mountain pass that also marks the Indo-China border. Due to its high altitude and the weather patterns of the Eastern Himalayas, the best time to visit Bumla Pass is during the summer months from May to October. During this period, the temperatures are mild and conducive for travel, ranging from 5°C to 21°C. The snow from winter begins to melt, the roads become more accessible, and the pass is officially open for tourists. The clear blue skies and vibrant wildflowers provide a mesmerizing backdrop for travelers. It is also the perfect time for sightseeing and capturing the natural beauty of the area. However, it is important to keep in mind that even during the summer months, weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so it is wise to check the forecast and road conditions before planning your trip.

The monsoon season, which lasts from July to September, brings heavy rains and possible landslides, making travel to Bumla Pass risky. Thus, many tourists opt to visit just before or after the monsoon. Visiting Bumla Pass during the winter months, from November to April, is generally not recommended as the region experiences heavy snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and harsh weather conditions. This makes the pass largely inaccessible with roads being blocked due to snow. If you are intent on experiencing the winter in Tawang, ensure you are well-prepared with proper gear and equipment. For the best experience and to ensure entry to the sensitive border area, tourists are required to obtain a special permit from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang as well as from the Indian Army cantonment in Tawang.
