The Cellular Jail National Memorial in Port Blair stands as a somber reminder of India's struggle for independence. Constructed during the British colonial period, it was used to exile Indian political prisoners to this remote location. These prisoners endured severe hardships and the jail is often referred to as 'Kala Pani' (black waters), symbolizing isolation. The architectural design is three-storied with seven wings, branching out from a central tower acting as the fulcrum. This design facilitated the supervision of the inmates from the central tower. Now a memorial to the freedom fighters, the complex hosts a museum and conducts light and sound shows portraying the harrowing experiences of the prisoners. With an eerie yet intriguing presence, the Cellular Jail epitomizes the sacrifice of those who fought for India's independence.
