Type of destination: Buddhist Monument
Chendebji Chorten, located near Trongsa in Bhutan, is an important stupa that was built in the 18th century by Lama Zhida, to subdue a demon that terrorized the area. This stupa is strategically positioned at a scenic confluence of rivers and is patterned on Kathmandu's Swayambhunath Stupa, with eyes painted at the four cardinal points. It is a significant monument in Bhutanese culture, embodying the nation's deeply ingrained Buddhist traditions. Visitors to Chendebji Chorten are greeted with a serene atmosphere and the often meditative sound of a nearby stream. The chorten itself is a large, white structure, adorned with a golden spire and vibrant prayer flags that flutter in the wind, symbolizing the omnipresence of the Buddha's teachings. Traditional Bhutanese architectural features and beautiful mandala paintings can be observed here. Around the chorten, there are several smaller stupas and prayer wheels, which are used by devotees for meditation and prayer. The chorten is frequently visited by both pilgrims and tourists on their journey across Bhutan, and it serves as a rest point with facilities for travelers.
