Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the Western Ghats, covering an area of approximately 85.067 square kilometers in the Mukundapuram taluk of Thrissur District, Kerala. Established in 1984, the sanctuary is an ecological haven for flora and fauna, including endangered species. It adjoins with the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, together forming a continuous protected area. The sanctuary is named after the Chimmony River, which flows through it. The region's dense forest is home to various animals such as the Asian elephant, leopard, tiger, Indian bison, sambar, and numerous smaller animals like sloth bear, and species of macaques and langurs. It also harbors a rich bird population, making it a sought-after destination for birdwatchers. Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is celebrated for its efforts in conserving the critically endangered species of fish, known as the Miss Kerala. The sanctuary offers activities like trekking, bamboo rafting, and camping, which are organized by the Forest Department, giving visitors an authentic wilderness experience.

Pros First : The road to the dam site is good by Indian standards and the scenery is mesmerizing. The are a few viewing points on the way where you get to see the rolling mountains and the spread out..

The road to chimmony is lovely. Loved the drive. The wildlife sanctuary was disappointing. The trek to see animals should be booked before hand. No spotting of wildlife other wise. Nice lovely view of..

I had a 3 hours walk with my wife. There was trekking guide arranged by the sanctuary. It was a great experience to walk inside such a humid forest. We had a river side walk which was amazing.
