Type of destination: Waterfall
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Clair's Falls, also known as 'Little Niagara of Sri Lanka', is a picturesque waterfall located near the town of Nuwara Eliya, within the hill country of Sri Lanka. It is one of the many scenic waterfalls that embellish the landscape of the island. The falls are named after Sir William Henry Clair, a British tea planter. It is a stepped waterfall that is divided into two drops, with a total height of around 80 meters (262 feet). The upper fall is hidden from view and it's difficult to access it due to the dense vegetation and steep terrain. The lower fall is the more spectacular and commonly visited section, easily observed from a viewpoint off the main road. The water cascades down a rocky precipice and continues as a narrow stream through the tea estates and lush vegetation. The falls are fed by the Kotmale Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, and are most voluminous during the monsoon season. The area surrounding the waterfall is rich in biodiversity and provides opportunities for bird-watching and nature photography. Visitors can enjoy the cool climate of Nuwara Eliya and its colonial architecture, and then take a short trip to experience the tranquility of Clair's Falls.

A dying waterfall
This waterfall is dying due to the Upper Kotmale Project. The water levels are drastically low and the beauty of the fall is vanishing.
