Must-Try Foods In Gokyo Lake (Sagarmatha National Park) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Gokyo Lakes, Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal

The remote area of Gokyo Lakes within Sagarmatha National Park is one of the less frequented yet most beautiful regions in the Everest Area. Historically, the Sherpa people, who are the indigenous inhabitants, have shaped the food culture here. Their diet has been largely influenced by the harsh, high-altitude environment and the need for high-calorie food to sustain energy. Since agriculture is challenging at such altitudes, traditional foods often include grains like barley, and the preservation of food through drying or fermenting is common. Additionally, with Buddhism being the predominant religion in the area, vegetarianism is quite prevalent, aligning with the religious belief of non-harm to animals. However, the influx of trekkers and climbers has introduced a more varied menu that caters to international tastes while still incorporating local Sherpa and Tibetan culinary traditions.
