How To Reach Gokyo Lake

Gokyo Lake, Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal

Gokyo Lakes are a network of freshwater lakes located in Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park, in the Everest region. At an altitude of 4,700 to 5,000 meters (15,400 to 16,400 ft), they are considered some of the highest freshwater lake systems in the world. To reach Gokyo Lakes, you will embark on a trekking adventure that requires good physical fitness and preparation. Here is the typical route to Gokyo Lakes:

Step 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

First, you need to arrive in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Tribhuvan International Airport is the main gateway for international travelers entering the country.

Step 2: Fly to Lukla

From Kathmandu, you will take a short, scenic flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, the starting point for most treks to the Everest region. Flights are weather dependent and can experience delays or cancellations, so it's wise to allocate extra days in your itinerary for unforeseen circumstances.

Step 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar

After reaching Lukla, you will begin your trek, with the first major stop being Namche Bazaar. This bustling mountain town is often referred to as the gateway to the high Himalayas. It usually takes two days to reach Namche Bazaar from Lukla, with an overnight stay in Phakding.

Step 4: Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

It is highly recommended to spend at least one extra day in Namche Bazaar to acclimatize to the high altitude. During this time, you can explore the town, visit nearby viewpoints, and enjoy short hikes.

Step 5: Trek to Gokyo Lakes

From Namche Bazaar, the trail to Gokyo Lakes deviates from the main Everest Base Camp trail and follows the less crowded path through the villages of Dole and Machhermo. The overall trek can take approximately 5 to 6 days, including the necessary acclimatization days to reach Gokyo Lakes from Namche Bazaar.

Step 6: Exploring Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri

Once you reach the Gokyo Lakes, you can explore the serene turquoise lakes, visit the Gokyo village, and if you are properly acclimatized and prepared, ascend Gokyo Ri for panoramic views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.

Required Permits

To visit Gokyo Lakes, you will need to obtain a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System). These can be acquired in Kathmandu or at the park entrance in Monjo.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit Gokyo Lakes are during the pre-monsoon season (March to May) and the post-monsoon season (September to November) when the weather is clearer.

Note

This trek is challenging due to its high altitude and the need for proper acclimatization. Hence, it is recommended to undertake this journey with proper preparation, adequate insurance, and where possible, an experienced guide.
