How To Reach Hiroshima

Welcome to Hiroshima, Japan!

Reaching Hiroshima by Air

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is the main gateway to Hiroshima by air. International travelers can connect through major hubs like Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) or Osaka (Kansai International Airport) to reach Hiroshima. Several domestic airlines operate flights between these cities and Hiroshima, including Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA).

For international visitors, it's often easiest to fly into one of Japan's larger airports and then catch a connecting flight to Hiroshima.

Accessing Hiroshima by Train

The bullet train, known as the Shinkansen, is a very popular and convenient way to travel to Hiroshima. From Tokyo, you can take the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen directly to Hiroshima Station. The journey takes approximately 4 hours on the Nozomi, the fastest service. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, please note that it cannot be used on Nozomi trains; instead, you can take the Hikari or Sakura services, which take a bit longer.

From Osaka, the Sanyo Shinkansen takes you to Hiroshima in about 1.5 hours. Kyushu is also well-connected to Hiroshima via the Kyushu Shinkansen. Shinkansen trains offer frequent and reliable service, making them an excellent choice for travelers.

Traveling to Hiroshima by Bus

Long-distance highway buses provide an economical alternative to trains and planes. While the journey is longer, buses can be a cost-effective option, particularly for travelers without a Japan Rail Pass. Various bus companies operate between major cities and Hiroshima, and many overnight services are available.

Getting to Hiroshima by Ferry

For a scenic route, you can also reach Hiroshima by ferry. Services run from a number of cities to Hiroshima Port. The port is connected to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park by tram (line 5). Matsuyama on Shikoku island is a popular ferry departure point, with both high-speed and regular ferries available.

Local Transit in Hiroshima

Upon arrival in Hiroshima, the city has an efficient public transportation network, including trams (streetcars), buses, and a ferry to Miyajima island (famous for Itsukushima Shrine and the floating torii gate). The Hiroshima Electric Railway Co. operates trams that cover much of the city and are a convenient way to reach major attractions.

For a seamless travel experience, always check the latest schedules and routes before your trip as services can change due to seasonal demands or maintenance.
