Jafarganj Cemetery (Murshidabad) History

A Glimpse into the Past: Jafarganj Cemetery

Located in the historic town of Murshidabad, West Bengal, the Jafarganj Cemetery is a testament to the region's rich Mughal past. This cemetery, which spans over 3.51 acres, is the final resting place for many members of the Nawab family of Bengal. The cemetery's history is interwoven with that of the Nawabs of Bengal, a reminder of the bygone era of Murshidabad's glory when it served as the capital of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa under Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah's rule.

Historical Significance

Jafarganj Cemetery is home to approximately 1,000 graves, including the tomb of the last Nawab of Bengal, Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah. Following the decisive Battle of Plassey in 1757, which led to the establishment of British power in India, Murshidabad continued to hold symbolic significance. The cemetery represents not only the final chapter of the Nawabs' reign but also serves as a symbol of the beginning of British rule in India.
