Jallianwala Bagh Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Jallianwala Bagh is a historic garden and 'memorial of national importance' in Amritsar, Punjab, India, commemorating one of the darkest days in Indian history. It is the site of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that took place on 13th April 1919 when British troops, under the command of General Dyer, opened fire on a peaceful gathering of unarmed civilians, including women and children, who were protesting against the Rowlatt Act. This act of colonial brutality resulted in hundreds of deaths and injured thousands, sparking outrage and marking a significant shift in the Indian independence movement. Today, Jallianwala Bagh has been transformed into a public garden and houses a memorial established in 1951 to honor the victims. The site includes a Martyr's Gallery, a flame-shaped eternal flame monument, and bullet marks preserved on the garden's walls. It serves as a somber reminder of the struggle for India's freedom.
