Must-Try Foods In Jeju (South Korea) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Jeju, South Korea

Jeju Island, often referred to as "Island of the Gods," has a unique culinary history steeped in its geographic isolation and the abundant resources from both the sea and the volcanic landscape. The traditional diet of Jeju was shaped by the harsh living conditions and relative poverty of the island inhabitants; thus, the food is simple yet hearty, utilizing local ingredients. It's an area where both fishermen and farmers have left their mark on the cuisine. The sea offers a variety of seafood, while the fertile soil, fed by volcanic ash, is perfect for growing vegetables. Over time, Jeju’s food culture has evolved but still maintains the essence of using fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
