Uperkot Fort is an ancient fortification located in the city of Junagadh, Gujarat, India. The fort has a long history and is believed to have been initially established by the Mauryan Empire in the 4th century BCE, with later additions and restorations made by different dynasties over the centuries. Perched on a plateau in the Girnar Hills, the imposing structure offers panoramic views of Junagadh. The fort complex encompasses several notable attractions, including Buddhist caves that date back to 2nd-3rd century AD, Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo, which are step wells with significant architectural merit, and the Jama Mosque. It also houses the ancient cannons named Neelam and Manek, which are major draws for history enthusiasts. The Uperkot Fort's strategic position and robust construction made it a vital defense site and it was believed to have withstood 16 sieges over a period of 1000 years due to its strong fortifications and natural defense offered by the Girnar Hills.
