Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuwo are two ancient stepwells located in Junagadh, Gujarat, India. The stepwells date back to the Solanki period, making them significant archaeological sites reflecting the advanced water management system and architectural wisdom of that era. Adi-Kadi Vav, named after two maids in the royal palace, is cut into the rock with a flight of 120 steps descending into the earth, a testament to the engineering marvel of its time. Navghan Kuwo, approximately 52 meters deep, is carved out of solid rock and was built around 1026 AD during the reign of the Chudasama dynasty. Historically, these wells provided water for drinking and irrigation purposes, vital in the semi-arid climate of Gujarat. The design of these wells also indicates a place for social gatherings and a cool retreat during scorching summer days. The craftsmanship of the wells, with their intricately carved stone steps, is an impressive example of the artistic skills of the ancient masons of Gujarat.
