Kandy Garrison Cemetery (Kandy) History

The Kandy Garrison Cemetery, Kandy, Sri Lanka

The Kandy Garrison Cemetery is a significant historical site located in Kandy, Sri Lanka, that offers a unique window into the colonial past of the country. Established during the British colonial era, around 1817, it served as the final resting place for the British nationals who were based in and around Kandy, particularly those connected with the British garrison in the area.

Historical Significance

The cemetery is a poignant reminder of the hardships faced by the British during their time in the tropical climate of Sri Lanka, which was then known as Ceylon. Many of the interments are of young men and women who succumbed to diseases such as malaria and cholera, which were rampant in the region during the 19th century. The inscriptions on the gravestones offer insights into the lives of the colonial administrators, planters, soldiers, and their families.

Restoration and Tourism

In the latter part of the 20th century, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair, but efforts were made to restore and maintain it as a serene historical site. The efforts paid off, and today the cemetery is managed by the Trustees of the Kandy Garrison Cemetery, with support from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

For tourists interested in the history of Karty and the British colonial period in Sri Lanka, the cemetery provides a fascinating destination. Visitors can walk among the well-kept graves and experience the quiet atmosphere that allows for reflection on this period of Sri Lankan history.
