Best Time To Visit Katra (Kashmir) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Katra, Kashmir, India

The best time to visit Katra, situated in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, is generally during the cooler months from September to March. This period is when the weather is most conducive for the trek to the sacred Vaishno Devi shrine, which is the main attraction in Katra. During these months, temperatures range from a pleasant 7°C to 20°C, making the pilgrimage and sightseeing comfortable. Monsoons, from July to August, are usually avoided due to the risk of landslides and slippery paths that may pose challenges for the visitors. Also, the winter months of December and January could see temperatures dipping to the sub-zero range, so appropriate winter clothing is essential for those visiting during this time.

However, for those interested in attending the festivals, the Navratri period, which occurs twice a year (usually around April and October), is particularly auspicious and attracts pilgrims in large numbers. The town of Katra is bustling with festive energy and religious fervor during these times. Note that the town becomes incredibly crowded during Navratris, and accommodations should be booked well in advance. Regardless of when you visit, always check the latest weather and local advisories, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
