Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred and serene body of water located near Pelling in the West Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim. Surrounded by dense forests and high mountains, it is considered a holy site by both Buddhists and Hindus. The name Khecheopalri signifies 'Khecheo' which means flying birds and 'Palri' which means the heaven. Local legend holds that birds safeguard the lake, and it is famously believed that leaves are not allowed to float on the lake's surface as they are promptly picked up by birds. The lake is also part of the Buddhists pilgrimage circuit, which includes the Dubdi Monastery, the Pemayangtse Monastery, and the Rabdentse Ruins. For nature lovers, the lake’s crystal-clear waters and the tranquil ambience offer a peaceful retreat, while the surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, including numerous species of birds. Though not large in size, the lake holds great significance, drawing pilgrims and tourists seeking spiritual solace and natural beauty.
